Would you be interested in a 'Debates You Can Win' section on our new forums?
How it might work:
Debates would be held as group debates, one or two Saturday nights a month.
(Probably just one since we're all kinda busy, but if there is enough
interest, maybe we can do two). We'll make a schedule or something.
In the section, potential debates will be posted by Admin (Suggestions can
be made via message to an admin's inbox) and anyone interested in
participating in the provided debate will comment in their interest on
the thread, telling what side of the position they would like to take.
Once there are teams of 3-4 people per side on each debate, it will be
selected for the Saturday night debate. We can have multiple debates on
the same night, provided that each debate has enough participants.
Debates will be open for 2 hours. Each participant will state which team they
are on (for/against), in a sort of role call. Once all participants have
made a sign in post, an admin will prompt them to start making their
first post.
Then, each participant will make ONE post stating their position and providing evidence to support (for) their position.
After each participant has made their first post, everyone will then make a
SECOND, rebuttal post arguing against all of the points that their
opposition made in their first posts. Rebuttal posts should consist of
evidence against the positions of their opposition.
Once all posts are in, a winning side will be named. Further, an over all winner from the winning side will be named.
To keep things fair and unbiased, a points system will be used.
POINTS will be award as follows:
POINTS will be deducted for:
Points will be tallied after the 2 hour mark, when all Poll Votes have been made.
A winner will be named, as well as an over all winner based on who received the MOST points for their team.
Over-all winners will be crowned DT Debater of the Month and we'll see if we can figure out some kind of special treat for you.
SO THE QUESTION IS:
What do you guys think? Should we have a once a month Judged Debates Night?
Would you want to participate? At least watch and vote?
What should we call the thread for the Judged Debates? "Real Debates" or "DT Debate Night" is the best I can think of.
Are there any other rules or things we should give/deduct points for?
